A Seafood House Built for Speed: qlub Brings Table-Side Payments to Fishwives

As one of Pasadena’s most popular seafood destinations, Fishwives fills its dining room and patio from the lunch rush straight through dinner service, seven days a week. That steady, high-volume flow of guests — many sharing raw bar platters and splitting checks — put growing pressure on the payment step at the end of every meal.

Key Challenges

Lunch-Hour Bottlenecks

With continuous service from 11:30 AM and a packed Old Town location, servers juggled food running, oyster shucking, and check drops simultaneously. Settling up meant handing a card to a server, waiting while it was processed away from the table, and waiting again for the slip to come back — several minutes lost at exactly the moment guests on a lunch break needed to leave.

Complicated Split Bills

Shared raw bar platters, steamer baskets, and group dining meant frequent requests to split checks by item or by seat — a slow, error-prone process on a traditional POS workflow.

Slower Table Turnover

The back-and-forth of requesting the bill, handing over payment, and returning the receipt kept tables occupied longer during peak hours, capping the number of guests Fishwives could seat per service.

Untapped Online Visibility

Despite a loyal following and strong in-house feedback, many happy diners never made it to Google to leave a review.

Overview

Fishwives is Pasadena’s premier seafood house and oyster bar, bringing New England-style seafood with a West Coast twist to Old Town Pasadena. Recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand for exceptional food at moderate prices, the restaurant is known for its raw bar of Pacific and Atlantic oysters, the Portland Maine Lobster Roll, N.E. Clam Chowder, and its signature Crown City Cioppino, all served in an easygoing, good-spirited atmosphere. That same popularity, however, created real operational strain at the payment stage — which is where qlub came in.

THE SOLUTION

Fishwives partnered with qlub to remove friction from the final step of the dining experience, without changing the relaxed character of the restaurant.

Seamless QR Code Payments

A qlub QR code presented with the bill lets guests review and settle the check in seconds from their own phones — no handing over a card, no waiting for it to come back.

Three Ways to Split the Bill

qlub lets guests divide the check by amount, by person, or by item, directly on screen — eliminating the back-and-forth that used to slow down large tables and shared platters.

POS Integration

qlub connects directly to Fishwives’ existing POS to pull the live bill, so guests always see exactly what has been ordered and payments are recorded against the correct check.

Integrated Google Reviews Prompt

After paying, satisfied guests are invited to share their experience on Google — turning great meals into visible social proof.

THE RESULTS

qlub delivered measurable improvements across service speed, staff workload, tips, and online presence.

~7 Minutes Saved Per Table

Removing the card hand-off and receipt run cut roughly seven minutes from the end of each visit, freeing up tables during the busiest lunch and dinner windows and allowing more guests to be seated per service.

+12% in Tips

Pre-set gratuity options lifted average tipping by around 12%, worth approximately $4,300 more per month — over $51,000 a year — for the service team

+25 Five-Star Reviews Every Month

The automated post-payment review prompt converted more happy diners into public reviewers, adding roughly 25 additional five-star Google reviews a month — around 300 a year — and strengthening Fishwives’ visibility in a competitive Pasadena dining scene.

~$17,200 Saved Annually on Card Processing

Shifting the majority of transactions to qlub lowered Fishwives’ effective card processing costs by an estimated $600 a month, alongside reduced reliance on terminal hardware.

Smoother Group Dining

Self-service bill splitting cut the time servers spent processing multi-card payments, reducing errors and letting the team focus on hospitality.

A LOOK AHEAD

With payments off servers’ plates, Fishwives can keep its focus where it belongs: fresh seafood, a lively raw bar, and warm, unhurried hospitality. As the restaurant continues to grow, qlub’s analytics will help the team understand peak-hour patterns and guest payment preferences — keeping the Old Town favorite as efficient as it is beloved.
